Baldwin nestled down into the pile of brown oak leaves that accumulated under the shrubs from the previous fall. To keep out the winter’s chill, he pulled his front paws close to his chest. “Yes, that is much better,” he quietly meowed. Tired from his busy morning, Baldwin closed his weary eyes and soon his thoughts drifted to the unexpected treat that he had enjoyed earlier.
It all came about when his human family woke up later than usual. There was so much activity in the house that he was fearful someone would trip over him, so he made a quick dash for the sofa, and settled himself between the throw pillows as he waited for normalcy to be restored in his household.
The end of his tail twitched back and forth expressing his irritation, since he was kept from his daily routine of eating breakfast, grooming himself and then, of course, napping. He watched his anxious family run from their bedrooms into the kitchen while putting on their clothes to grab a few pieces of buttered toast from the table.
Baldwin did not jump down from his place of safety, until he heard the front door slam, and the car pull out quickly from the driveway. “Finally, the house belongs to me.” he meowed as he slowly made his way into the kitchen to see what little bits of food scraps he could find on the floor.
His nose twitched; a delicious, strong fragrance still lingered in the room. Baldwin’s tummy gave a rumble as he lifted his head and looked around. He determined that the wonderful scent was coming from the table. Baldwin leaped onto the chair to investigate, and then very carefully, he jumped, and to his amazement, right in the middle of the table, sat a plate of yellow, fluffy, scrambled eggs. “Wow, I am such a lucky cat!” he purred excitedly as he began to nibble.
He was so preoccupied enjoying all the delicious flavors that he failed to hear someone walk into the kitchen. “Baldwin, get down!” shouted the surprised mother of the humans. Baldwin jumped down in fright, and quickly ran out the cat door into the cold, morning air.
Even now, as he thought about his tasty treat, his heart raced with pride at his bold attempt to eat the people’s food. Baldwin licked his whiskers just in case he had missed a tiny spot of eggs.
What a glorious morning it was, but now he was very thirsty from the salty eggs. He thought it would be best not to return to his house right away, for he wanted his human mother to feel a little remorseful about giving him such a fright. He got up, took a big stretch and proceeded to the birdbath in order to quench his thirst.
